Tax Preparation: How to understand your 1040 (so you can save money)

Look, no-one wants to learn how tax forms work. I get it. It’s needlessly confusing, boring as heck, and it hurts even my head as a tax guy having to look at 1,000 words on each of these pages and remember what they mean.

But in boring lies brilliance (or something like that), and there is an ocean’s worth of opportunity if you take the time to learn the stuff that other people find boring and not worth their time.

Understanding the 1040 form is a shining example of this.

The 1040 is the primary tax summary form through which all of your taxable elements will eventually show up. If you can get to a point where you understand what it’s indicating, you start to learn which elements you can control, and how to manage them to your advantage. W2 income, dividends, interest, capital gains and losses, business income, real estate investments – name it, and it has unique opportunities and limitations you benefit from knowing.

You don’t have to become a nerdy four-eyes accountant like me, but take a few minutes to learn about one or two elements of this form that apply to you, and how you can change them to your advantage. It’s a skill you won’t regret.
